It’s the start of a brand new year, which means it’s no time to be complacent. Ensure you are on top of your tax and financial responsibilities to maximise your tax-free allowances and minimise your liabilities.

Whether you’re a business owner managing your finances or an investor looking to maximise your yields with tax-friendly savings, staying organised now can save you time, stress, and money later. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for the key deadlines and opportunities that could impact your finances over the coming months.

‘When is the ISA tax-free savings allowance year end?’

The Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance for the 2025/26 tax year is £20,000. You can spread this across a Cash ISA, Stocks and Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA (up to £4,000), Junior ISA (up to £9,000), or an Innovative Finance ISA.

If you haven’t yet maximised your allowance, consider topping up your ISA before the tax year ends on 5th April 2026. Remember, any unused allowance doesn’t roll over, so this is a use-it-or-lose-it opportunity to save and invest tax-efficiently.

By making the most of your ISA allowance, you can shield your investments from capital gains tax and dividend tax. Over time, these tax-free benefits can have a significant impact on your wealth growth.

Note: The process of instructing any ISA contributions can take a fair bit of time. Platforms have strict deadlines, which we are beholden to. If you are considering topping up your ISA for this tax year, all signed paperwork must be with us as soon as possible – ideally no later than close of business 14th March 2026. When is the HMRC VAT deadline?

If your business is VAT-registered, you’ll need to meet filing and payment deadlines based on your VAT return periods. For example, businesses on quarterly VAT returns will need to ensure that any filings and payments for the April-June 2025 quarter are submitted by 7th August 2025.

Late VAT returns often result in surcharge liability notices, and late payments may well attract interest. If you’re unsure about your VAT obligations, seeking professional advice early can prevent costly mistakes.

When do employers need to submit RTI for payroll?

For employers running payroll, real-time information (RTI) submissions must be made on or before each payday to avoid penalties. Additionally, monthly PAYE payments are due by 22nd of each month (or 19th if you’re choosing to pay by post).
